Environmental lawsuits can be brought by the private actions of citizens to force the cleanup of contamination or pollution, or under the common law for damages to person or property that result from contamination of water, land or air, or from exposure to harmful substances.

Lawsuits for environmental harm caused by a third party – for example, an individual exposed to asbestos in the workplace – are often brought pursuant to state common law.
